In the framework of the course we will discuss the main anthropological approaches to the ‘political’. Starting from the outset of social anthropology, when anthropologists were dealing with the so-called ‘primitive’ societies until the 1960’s, from which, current studies of political anthropology originated, emphasizing the importance of colonialism and the spread of the capitalist mode of production. The relationship between religion and kinship with politics, will also be examined as well resistances, nation and ethnicity, and contemporary anthropological approaches of the state and political participation. Concepts such as civil society, globalization and neoliberalism, will also be discussed and the course will conclude with a section on the political dimensions of anthropological knowledge.
Learning outcomes: The course aims at acquainting and familiarize students with the subject of political anthropology and the anthropology of politics. Specific learning objectives include getting acquainted with the most important anthropological currents in the field of political anthropology and the anthropology of politics, and discussing different forms of the political in “traditional” and “modern” societies.
