The seminar is organized around two major fields of inquiry and research. First, there are theoretical issues involved in the study of the relationship between history and visual culture, like the nature of visual representations, their similarity and difference from other more familiar, material to historians, like the printed or written source. Also, the relationship between visual culture, cultural memory, and public history will also be explored. Second, the seminar will discuss a number of movies and documentaries related to the following themes: Antiquity, Colonialism and anti-colonial struggle, the Second World War, the Holocaust, and the civil wars in Greece and Spain.
Learning outcomes: The seminar aims at exploring the relationship between history and optical culture focusing on historical films and documentaries. Students will get acquainted with visual representations of historical events and the language of images. They will explore the inventive nature of visual images and the way these images produce truth claims. They will delve into the relationship between cultural memory, optical culture and modern and postmodern forms of historical consciousness.
