Gender, Care and Social Inclusion: Challenges for Contemporary Societies

Περίληψη: The seminar will examine the relationship between gender, care responsibilities, paid employment and social inclusion in contemporary societies. Particular attention will be paid to the challenges of reconciling work and family life and to the ways in which unpaid care work continues to be unequally distrib uted between women and men. It will be discussed how gender norms and expectations regarding motherhood, fatherhood and caregiving influence individuals’ employment opportunities, career development, income, well-being and participation in public life. The seminar will also address the situation of single parents, families caring for children, older people or persons with disabilities, and workers facing insecure or inflexible employment conditions. Drawing on research findings and examples from different European welfare-state contexts, the seminar will explore the role of parental leave, childcare and long-term care services, flexible working arrangements, employers and social policy in supporting work–family reconciliation. It will also critically consider whether existing policies reduce gender inequalities or, in some cases, reproduce traditional gender roles.
Βιογραφικό:
Raminta Bardauskienė is an Associate Professor and Vice-Dean for Science at the Faculty of Human and Social Studies, Mykolas Romeris University. She has more than twenty years of experience in teaching social work at bachelor’s and master’s levels in Lithuania and at partner universities abroad. From 2020 to 2026, she coordinated the Erasmus Mundus European Joint Master in Social Work with Children and Youth ESWOCHY. Her academic work combines social work education, international programme development, research and collaboration with social-service organisations.
