H-234 Gender History

H-234 Gender History

COURSE INFORMATION

Focusing on Western societies from the late eighteenth to the turn of the twenty-first century, the course offers a thematically rich introduction to the key theoretical, methodological and interpretive questions that have shaped the history of gender and women internationally. Through a range of case studies, it illuminates the complex ways in which historical change affects gender, the shifting conceptualisations of gender and sexual difference across different historical contexts, and the consequences of these transformations for social relations.

Throughout the semester, the analytical category of gender is approached from multiple angles. The thematic structure of the course enables comparative perspectives across different national cases, including Greece, and highlights the interdisciplinary character of the field. The lectures revisit classical themes of historical inquiry (politics, labour, social protest, citizenship, war and colonialism) all of which have been substantially recast by gender history. The course also examines topics in which gender analysis has been central from the outset: the private sphere and family relations, the body, emotions and sexuality. These topics are explored through foundational texts that have shaped the development of the field, alongside more recent scholarship that has advanced innovative methodological and analytical approaches.

The course’s primary aim is to familiarise students with the central themes, concepts, debates and discussions that have defined gender history from its beginnings to the present day.
