The Department of Social Anthropology and History was established along with the University of the Aegean in 1984 and is one of its oldest departments. Currently it forms part of the School of Social Sciences along with the Departments of Geography, Sociology, and Cultural Technology and Communication. The Department of Social Anthropology and History initially received students at the graduate level (1987-88) and soon after at the undergraduate level (1988-89). The Department has grown considerably with regard to staff, students and infrastructure over the past 30 years. Today, there are 450 undergraduate students enrolled at the Department, 30 graduate students and 19 doctoral candidates.
