Summer Practice Program

The Department of Social Anthropology and History participates in the institutional project “Internship Program of the University of the Aegean for the academic years 2024–2025, 2025–2026 and 2026–2027”, under the Program “Human Resources and Social Cohesion 2021–2027” and the Axon “Education & Lifelong Learning,” co-funded by the European Social Fund.

The Summer Internship Program aims to familiarize students of the Program with professional environments in which the theoretical and methodological tools of Gender Studies can be applied. The implementation of the Summer Practice Program in various organizations makes use of students’ theoretical background in gender issues and enhances their knowledge at the level of practical and institutional approaches to addressing gender inequalities through direct engagement with social services.

The program is addressed to students in the second cycle of studies (from the 3rd semester onwards). The Summer Practice Program takes place in public and private organizations and lasts two months (July–August). It is included in the curriculum as an elective course corresponding to 10 ECTS credits. Interns receive financial compensation through the program.

Organization and Procedures
Each year, the departmental coordinator and the members of the coordinating committee of the Summer Practice Program, in collaboration with the other teaching staff of the Study Program, explore opportunities for cooperation and the availability of various host organizations and compile a list of institutions where students can undertake their internships. The main criteria for selecting host organizations include the evaluation of previous collaboration with each organization, the type of activities carried out during the practice period, and the interns’ ability to cover their accommodation expenses in specific locations.

The host organizations provide the necessary infrastructure, workspace, and specialized staff for the training, guidance, and supervision of the student interns.

Selection Procedure

The selection of students who will participate in the internship is carried out by the coordinating committee. Eligible to participate are students from the 3rd semester onwards who have successfully passed at least six courses, according to the indicative program of study.

Students are invited to submit applications, selecting three host organizations in order of preference where they wish to undertake their internship.

For the selection and ranking of students for the available practice program positions, the following criteria are taken into account:
(a) the number of courses in which the student has been successfully examined, as indicated in the official transcript provided by the Department’s Secretariat, in relation to the total number of courses they were expected to have completed (weighted at 50%), and

(b) the grade point average, as indicated in the official transcript provided by the Department’s Secretariat (weighted at 50%).

The final score is calculated according to the following formula:
[(X/Y * 0.5) + (Z/10 * 0.5)]

Where:
X = Number of successfully completed courses
Y = Total number of courses that the student was expected to have successfully completed up to their current semester (6th semester or earlier)
Z = Grade Point Average (GPA)

For the ranking of students, in cases where demand for internship positions exceeds availability and a tie occurs based on the criteria of the number of successfully completed courses and the GPA, the following is taken into account for ranking and selection:

  • the number of courses in which the student has been successfully examined, as indicated in the official transcript provided by the Department’s Secretariat.

If there are sufficient internship positions available in the host organizations cooperating with the program, all students who apply are accepted.

Evaluation of Interns
For each student participating in the practice program, a supervising faculty member (academic supervisor) is appointed, who collaborates with the host organizations to define specific tasks for the interns. During the internship, students work under the guidance of supervisors at the host organizations, who are in communication and cooperation with the teaching staff of the Study Program. At the end of the practice, the supervisors of the host organizations prepare an evaluation report for each intern.

After the completion of the internship, students submit a Report to their supervisor which includes:
(a) a systematic record of the work assigned to them,
(b) a description of the methods they used, and
(c) a self-evaluation of their work and an overall assessment of their experience.

The final evaluation of the internship is carried out by the supervising faculty member, based on the student’s Report and the evaluation report prepared by the supervisor at the host organization.

Remuneration and Insurance
The Summer Practice Program provides interns with remuneration and insurance coverage for the duration of their placement, which is covered by the Social Security Fund (IKA). The cost of both remuneration and insurance is borne by the funding body.
