International online conference “Anthropology of Religion in Transition: Transreligiosity, Global Shifts and the Future in the Field”

The project ReSpell (“Religion, Spirituality and Well-being. A Comparative Approach of Transreligiosity and Crisis in Southern Europe”, funded by FCT), in collaboration with the Department of Social Anthropology and History of the University of the Aegean, is organizing an international online conference on 15–16 May 2026 entitled “Anthropology of Religion in Transition: Transreligiosity, Global Shifts and the Future in the Field”.

The conference seeks to re-approach the anthropology of religion in the light of contemporary social and cultural transformations, focusing on the intersections of religious, spiritual and secular practices. Particular emphasis is given to the concept of “transreligiosity” as an analytical tool for the study of the fluidity and transformations of religious experiences in the contemporary globalized environment.

At the same time, the conference highlights theoretical, methodological and analytical challenges faced by anthropologists of religion today, in Greece, southern Europe and internationally, focusing on issues such as the relationship of religion and spirituality with power, inequalities and contemporary global crises.
