In this course, we examine the ways the anthropological perspective has been applied to the study of music. We consider the social and symbolic aspects of music in culture and music as culture. We approach music not as an autonomous artistic form of sound organisation, but as a social and a cultural phenomenon, focusing on the multiplicity of the symbolic meanings of musical performances in various societies, as well as in different contexts of a single society.
Learning outcomes: Through the analysis of the multiple uses of music in different cultures, we will explain why the anthropology of music is currently not a discipline based on a particular “object” of study (that is, music in “other” cultures), but rather a wider theoretical perspective, which reconstructs the ways we consider music in general as a field of producing and negotiating cultural meanings, social practices and power relations.
