What place should religion and the citizens’ religious beliefs have in the Commonwealth? Does religion contribute to the stability and the maintenance of the State, to the citizens’ adherence to its constitutive values, and to the cultivation of their freedom of thought, or does it undermine them? Which is the best way in which political and religious power should be related? Which one is higher than the other? These are some of the questions which major modern political philosophers have tackled in their effort to give new foundations to political power. In this seminar, we focus on Machiavelli, Hobbes, Spinoza, Locke and Rousseau; we read closely and discuss extracts from their writings (see below, bibliography).

Learning outcomes
After having attended the course, students should be able a) to present in a clear manner the main questions that form the context in which Machiavelli, Hobbes, Spinoza, Locke and Rousseau thematize the relationship between religion and politics; b) to present the main positions of these philosophers on the role that religion should have in the Commonwealth; c) to expound on the arguments that lead to these positions; d) to pinpoint and to discuss in detail the divergences and the convergences between these positions and arguments.
