W/S-097 Religion and politics in modern political philosophy

COURSE INFORMATION

What place should religion and the citizens’ religious beliefs have in the Commonwealth? Does religion contribute to the stability and the maintenance of the State, to the citizens’ adherence to its constitutive values, and to the cultivation of their freedom of thought, or does it undermine them? Which is the best way in which political and religious power should be related? Which one is higher than the other? These are some of the questions which major modern political philosophers have tackled in their effort to give new foundations to political power. In this seminar, we focus on Machiavelli, Hobbes, Spinoza, Locke and Rousseau; we read closely and discuss extracts from their writings (see below, bibliography).

The seminar is organized as follows:

  • -Introduction: the secularization of politics (week 1)
  • -Machiavelli (weeks 2-3)
  • -Hobbes (weeks 4-5)
  • -Spinoza (weeks 6-8)
  • -Locke (weeks 8-10)
  • -Rousseau (weeks 10-12)
  • -Concluding remarks
