The course offers a creative combination of ethnographic analysis and methodological tools and approaches. In each of our meetings, we will be focusing on specific ethnographies of religion that have been conducted in the Greek context, discussing in depth and comparatively the various theoretical and analytical themes with which these ethnographies contribute to the anthropology of religion, while delving into the methodological strategies that emerge. We will explore, through oral presentations, ethnographic videos and ethnographic exercises, some of the most important ethnographic research on religion, spirituality and contemporary religiosity in Greece. At the same time, we will cultivate the knowledge and ability of multiple methods of empirical research on anthropological issues of religiosity: from auto-ethnography, autobiography and embodied and sensorial self-reflection to collaborative and multimodal creative methodologies.
Course Structure:
Learning outcomes: The course aims to familiarize students with the ethnographic study of religion, spirituality and contemporary religiosity in the Greek context, while cultivating the necessary methodological tools for conducting field research on themes of the anthropology of religion. By gaining a rich understanding of what ethnographic research on religion in Greece signifies, they will be able to approach empirical research on religion creatively, to produce ethnographic audiovisual material on a research topic of their choice and become epistemologically and practically aware of the collaborative roles between the ethnographer and ethnographic interlocutors.
