H-252 Social and cultural history of Greece in the twentieth century

COURSE INFORMATION

The aim of the course is to critically examine the historical transformations and ruptures experienced by Greek society during the 20th century. At the same time, it seeks to situate the Greek case within its European context. The course frames the key periodisations and turning points of the Greek 20th century: the First World War and the arrival of refugees, social policy, the formation of minorities with the incorporation of the “New Lands,” the German occupation and the Shoah, Resistance and the Civil War, the postwar climate of national-mindedness, economic reconstruction, urbanisation, the Metapolitefsi, European integration, migration, the Balkan crisis, and the Macedonian question.
