The course focuses on the main theories that have shaped the development of Social Anthropology from the end of the 19th c. to the end of the 20th, from the precursors of anthropology, evolutionist theories and functionalism to structuralism, Marxist anthropology, theory of practice and post-structuralism. Emphasis is placed on the characteristics of the three ‘national schools’ (British, French and American) of Social Anthropology and certain basic concepts, such as evolution, culture, function, process, structure and agency.
Learning outcomes: The course aims at familiarizing students with the history of Anthropology and its pioneers, inspire them and give them a sense of the identity of the discipline.
What is more, the course aims at introducing the main paradigms that have shaped the development of Social Anthropology from the end of the 19th c. to the end of the 20th.
