This course is an introduction to the Anthropology of Health, to the basic concepts and methods used. Through classical and recent anthropological studies, and drawing both from the international and the Greek ethnographic scene students become acquainted with current trends as well as with the history of this field. How do people understand and conceptualize health, disease and wellbeing; what symbolic systems and systems of belief are enacted in the context of ill health; where do they look for therapies and explanations and what kinds of therapies and explanations; what institutions are key.

Learning outcomes:
Anthropology of health underlines the plurality of representations related to (ill)health, the historical and political dimensions of being ill and the role of structural inequalities, the way dominant categorizations about difference inform the biopolitical targeting of health care. Themes that will be studied include the following: issues of belief, medical pluralism, medicalization and biomedicalization, the differences that have been brought by the new biomedical technologies in the conceptualization of life, the emergence of the biosocial body, structural violence and health inequalities, the surveillance of the body, global health, medical humanitarianism and the prism of critical medical anthropology.
Having completed the course, the student will be in the position to:
- Know one of the basic fields of anthropological inquiry,
- To understand the different ways people, make sense of health and disease, in different contexts,
- To be aware of how health and disease as well as the handling of the body in such contexts is linked with other parts of everyday life,
To be able to analyze the current reconceptualizing of health and ill health, normality and abnormality, natural and artificial, also in the context of the more recent technological developments.
