What can we learn from garbage about a culture? When does material become excessive and lose its value? What is thrown away and why? What ideas and practices related to waste exist in other cultures, and how do they reflect cultural values and power structures? Do discarded things have a “second life” and who determines this? These are some of the questions we seek to explore during the seminar. Students review the literature to gain knowledge from other cultures and then begin to investigate what happens in our own culture. Through fieldwork and semi-structured interviews, they walk around neighborhoods, visit consumers and document ways of disposing waste. They speak with authorities, focus on “useless” things and the reasons they are deprived of value, examine possibilities for reintegrating waste into social life. The goal is to understand the role of culture in our relationship with the environment, doing anthropology through garbage.
Learning outcomes:
Upon completion of the seminar, students are expected to:
1. Understand how waste, as surplus material, carries cultural meaning and expresses cultural values, social structures, and consumer practices.
2. Be able to apply anthropological theory to empirical data.
3. Acquire knowledge of various cultures and become sensitized to issues of circular economy and sustainability.
General Competences:
Upon completion of the seminar, students are expected to:
1. Have developed ethnographic skills and experience in field research.
2. Gain experience in teamwork and collaboration.
3. Have acquired methods for search, interpretation and synthesis of data.
4. Have gained a deeper understanding of our relationship to the environment.
