This seminar examines the pivotal role of religion and religious difference in the early modern Ottoman Empire, a state that had inherited and subsequently transformed the Islamic political tradition. The focus is on the concept of governance, which allows for the examination of a range of issues surrounding the exercise of power (e.g., the unequal relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims, sultanic ideology, the position of the church, the conscription of subjects). Through the analysis of selected archival sources, students will have the opportunity to understand the different position of religion in the state that ruled for centuries over the vast majority of what is now Greece.
Learning outcomes : Students who participate in the seminars, study the material and complete the exercises and assignments for the course become familiar with contemporary approaches to the history of the Ottoman period, focusing on methods of governance in the Ottoman realm and the significance of religious difference for the socio-political order. They also learn to use historical sources, especially archival ones, to recognize their potential and limitations, and to develop a critical attitude toward evidence from the past and official narratives.
