The course offers an introduction to historical studies to first year students. Students are invited to get familiar with specific issues of historical inquiry, including the relation of history to other social sciences and social anthropology in particular. The subject matter of the course is divided in three sections. Section one examines key issues of historical thinking, like the relation of history to memory, temporality and historicity. A short introduction to the disciplinization of history from 1800 until today is also included. Section two presents the skills required for historians and major issues of historical methodology. Students get acquainted with all forms of historical material, including oral testimonies, autobiographical writing and visual material. Section three introduces students to some specific historical and methodological issues, (i.e, the concepts of fact and event, the forms of historical interpretation, history and narrative and the ambivalent relation of subjectivity and objectivity in historical inquiry.
Learning outcomes: Students get systematically acquainted with the discipline of history and its specificities. The courses’s objective is to make students understand that historical knowledge is far more than the sum total of historical facts and cannot be limited to the past for the sake of the past alone. On the contrary past and present are closely related in socially and culturally specific ways. In other words the course advances the idea that historical knowledge and historical thinking are associated both to the present and the past. Students are also expected to learn the major skills of historical work and are invited to consider some key issues and debates in contemporary period in the prospect of rethinking their relation to history and the past.
General Competences:
Students are expected to think and rethink critically on historical knowledge and thinking and consider the part of historical imagination in the structuring of historical narratives. They all get knowledge of the skills used by historians in their work and during lectures they are invited to use them in discussing specific examples of testimonies and documents. Students are also get to understand the complex relation between past and present and how the present influences all understanding of the past. They are also invited to understand the different and often conflicting ways with which specific social and cultural groups structure their identities in relation or opposition to specific historical narratives.
