Learning outcomes: Students get systematically acquainted with the discipline of history and its specificities. The courses’s objective is to make students understand that historical knowledge is far more than the sum total of historical facts and cannot be limited to the past for the sake of the past alone. On the contrary past and present are closely related in socially and culturally specific ways. In other words the course advances the idea that historical knowledge and historical thinking are associated both to the present and the past. Students are also expected to learn the major skills of historical work and are invited to consider some key issues and debates in contemporary period in the prospect of rethinking their relation to history and the past.

General Competences: 
Students are expected to think and rethink critically on historical knowledge and thinking and consider the part of historical imagination in the structuring of historical narratives. They all get knowledge of the skills used by historians in their work and during lectures they are invited to use them in discussing specific examples of testimonies and documents. Students are also get to understand the complex relation between past and present and how the present influences all understanding of the past. They are also invited to understand the different and often conflicting ways with which specific social and cultural groups structure their identities in relation or opposition to specific historical narratives.
