The political unification of vast territories in Europe, Asia, and Africa under the Ottoman dynasty for over four centuries had multiple consequences for historical developments and social, economic, demographic, cultural, and other developments. The course draws on contemporary issues and phenomena directly linked to the Ottoman past of the countries and populations in this vast area (e.g., minority populations, Islam in the Balkans, tensions in the Middle East, cultural similarity) and examines their history and the ways in which the institutions and developments of the Ottoman period have left their mark on the present. It also examines issues of perception and representation of the Ottoman past in the 20th and 21st centuries.
