L-301 Research and essay writing methods

COURSE INFORMATION

This course is devoted to academic essay writing and aims at providing students with the relevant skills and techniques. Essay writing is the genre mainly associated with written presentation of research findings. Therefore, in this course students are also familiarized with research methods and techniques in the social sciences. However, the course pivots around organizing and structuring a text as a coherent whole while focusing on issues of academic ethics (e.g. plagiarism).

Learning outcomes:

This course aims at familiarizing students with academic (essay) writing and providing the relevant skills though in-class practice. Students who complete the course are expected to be able to organize and compose academic texts following appropriate practices.

Familiarization with the demands of academic essay writing as a special genre
Familiarization with the structure, aims and mode of composing an academic essay
Recognition of the main research methods and techniques used in Social Anthropology and History

Student Performance Evaluation:	Language of evaluation: Greek Method of evaluation: Final written exam evaluating the understanding and composing academic essays through a combination of methods (multiple choice questionnaires, short-answer questions, written essay). Obligations of students: participation at the weekly classes (optional) written work (optional) oral presentations (optional) final written exam (compulsory)
