This course examines the relation of social anthropology with the rest of the social sciences in Greece. It also examines the development of Greek anthropological thought in three successive phases: a first postwar phase, when Greece was studied by foreign ethnographers as if it was an “other society”, a second phase in the 1980s, when a gender perspective is anthropologically applied in the study of Greek society, and a third phase, from the 1990s onwards, when the focus turns on various forms of cultural differentiation, in connection to either ethno-cultural minorities or various categories of immigrants. The course covers a wide range of topics: the value system of “honour and shame” as depicted in the classical monographs on the Mediterranean, the construction of gender and sexuality, kinship and the family, female sociality and religion, male sociality and the coffeehouse. It also discusses the recent processes of cultural differentiation in Greek society.
Learning outcomes: This course presents the findings of ethnographic research on Greek society. It aims at presenting to Greek students the critical perspective, that social anthropology is, through the familiar example of their own society. In this respect It invites students to participate in a process of “de-familiarization” with what they often take for granted and it thus works as a first step to critical “self-knowledge”.
General Competences: This course contributes to the establishment of a critical perspective on self and other. In connection to many other courses in the same program of studies, it cultivates an attitude of understanding and tolerance towards alterity but also invites in creative and inductive thinking.
