The course examines how anthropological questions on cultural diversity and the method of participant observation are applied in the study of education and school. Education refers to multiform phenomena (eg learning, teaching, knowledge, sociability, language, identities and subjectivity). At the same time the anthropological interest itself on education and schooling has multiple origins and links to other social sciences (eg. questions about the constuction of collective identity through education and schooling). The course develops topics such as the relationship between education and modernity, the role of education and school in rural micro-societies and in urban spaces with focus on specific ethnographic cases, education in relation to ethnocultural minorities or migrant and refugee populations, the production of sociality in formal school and in informal educational activities.
In addition to theoretical texts and ethnographies, the lesson will be based on the screening and discussion of fiction films and documentaries focusing on the relationship with education, on individual and collective experiences of education and schooling, and on interactions in educational contexts.
Learning outcomes:
The course aims to:
– Familiarize students with anthropological concepts and theories regarding education and school with special emphasis on ethnographic research
– highlight the usefulness of the bottom-up approach to the relationship with school and education
-in relation to the school, to make it seem less familiar, to cultivate the need to see what is happening beyond what we are used to seeing and understanding.
– Highlight the varied and complex dynamics of social interaction in specific educational contexts
– show the connections of the anthropology of education with other scientific perspectives that explore different dimensions of educational processes and school
General Competences:
The present course aims to get conceptually beyond fixed and ethnocentric understandings of “education”.
