This seminar will offer a critical reading of ethnographic research and anthropological studies of diverse Mediterranean societies and cultures. Focusing on the Eastern Mediterranean region, the course examines issues of conflict, nationalisms and performances of collective identity, and discuss Mediterrannean mobilities and modernities. Three cases will be considered: a) the local context of Thrace caracterized by the coexistence of a “Greek” majority and a “Muslim” minority; b) Palestine / Israel in relation to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; and c) Cyprus and its division into a “Greek Cypriot” and a “Turkish Cypriot”part.
Ethnographic anthropological studies will be discussed in relation to special historical dynamics: what was the role played by the Ottoman past and colonialism (e.g .the British Mandate in Palestine and the French Mandate on Syria from 1920 to 1947 and the British sovereignty in Cyprus from 1879 to 1960) in the formation of the Eastern Mediterranean region as a space of intercultural communication, travel, commerce and war? At the same time, we will historically contextualize the role played by Mediterranean ethnography and anthropology in the processes of reification and exoticization of the Mediterranean which stands in the european imaginary as a marginal area in the geographic and symbolic boundaries of Europe
